Kate Wedin’s Career Story
Real Estate Transactions Coordinator – ATCO

This series features the professional journeys of a wide range of individuals across Canada’s real estate development industry. Often, these stories highlight how rewarding careers in real estate development are the result of following your interests, fostering personal and professional networks, and keeping an open mind about what a career in real estate development might be.
Meet Kate Wedin – Real Estate Transactions Coordinator – ATCO.
How did you get started in your career?
After completing my Bachelor of Commerce major in Real Estate Studies, I knew real estate was the industry for me. But my time in the program helped me figure out where I wanted to specialize. Getting involved with the Real Estate Student Association, case competitions, and networking showed me the many paths within the field, and I found myself drawn to commercial real estate. After graduating, I focused on opportunities that would let me grow in a corporate environment, which led me to my current role as a Transactions Coordinator at ATCO. While I am only a month in, I’m excited to learn from the team, gain hands-on experience in leasing and transaction processes, and continue growing in commercial real estate.
What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?
My first professional job was my internship with Calgary Housing after my third year of university, which opened up my understanding of the public side of real estate. Calgary Housing showed me the complexities of the industry beyond just physical buildings. I learned how decisions impact communities, how important collaboration is, and how much thoughtful planning goes into every project. That experience gave me a strong foundation and shaped the way I approach real estate today, especially as I begin working in corporate transactions.
What inspired you to pursue this career path?
The real estate industry has intrigued me from a young age. I’m a third-generation Banffite, so I grew up seeing firsthand how complex real estate can be, especially within a national park where every decision affects the community in meaningful ways. That perspective made me realize how much real estate shapes daily life and the importance of thoughtful decision-making. Pursuing this career felt natural because I wanted to be part of the processes that allow organizations to use their spaces effectively and responsibly. Transactions may not be the most visible side of real estate, but they are critical to keeping communities and organizations functioning. I enjoy the problem-solving, collaboration, and constant movement in the work. The industry is always evolving, and no day ever feels the same.
Tell us about a project or achievement you are most proud of.
I am most proud of my time with the Real Estate Student Association (RESA). I joined the executive team at the end of my third year as the Director of Membership and Operations, and a few months later, I was offered the president role going into my final year. It quickly became one of the highlights of my university experience. I loved supporting students who were beginning to find their place in real estate and introducing the industry to those who were just starting to explore it. Seeing my peers get excited about real estate made the work feel meaningful. The experience strengthened my leadership skills and showed me how much I enjoy creating opportunities for others and building a strong, connected community. It was a wonderful way to finish my final year.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the field?
Stay curious and take every opportunity to learn. Real estate is an industry where you grow by asking questions, connecting with people, and getting involved. Do not hesitate to reach out because most professionals are happy to share their experiences and advice. Stepping out of your comfort zone can feel intimidating, but saying yes to opportunities and industry events has been one of the most important factors in my own journey. Building genuine relationships is one of the best ways to find your footing. I am still early in my career, and I have learned that being open, engaged, and willing to learn makes all the difference.
