Megan Bach’s Career Story

Development Manager – Shane Homes Group of Companies

This series features the professional journeys of a wide range of individuals across Canada’s real estate development industry. Often, these stories highlight how rewarding careers in real estate development are the result of following your interests, fostering personal and professional networks, and keeping an open mind about what a career in real estate development might be.

Meet Megan Bach, P.ENG – Development Manager – Shane Homes Group of Companies.

How did you get started in your career?

My career began after graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Calgary. My first role was at Stantec, where I worked in municipal and subdivision engineering design. This role offered an invaluable introduction to the planning and infrastructure behind land development and gave me a strong foundation in technical design and understanding municipal development processes.

What inspired you to pursue this career path?

I’ve always really enjoyed the idea of building communities, turning parcels of land into places people call home. Civil engineering appealed to me as a way to contribute meaningfully to urban growth and quality of life in large tangible scopes – think roads, bridges, land development, and water treatment. While it’s hard to know exactly what you want to do in university, I’m so glad I ended up here! When I learned more about land development, I really found I was able to merge my technical background with more of a strategic lens and a people-focused purpose, all while connecting to my community.

How have mentors influenced your career?

I’ve been fortunate to learn from several amazing mentors throughout my career. I’m especially grateful for the mentorship and support I’ve received from Shane Homes’ leadership team, whose guidance has been invaluable. I’ve also developed close relationships with mentors through the CREW Calgary Mentorship Program, many of whom I now consider to be friends and key influences in my personal and professional life.

What is one project or achievement you are most proud of?

It’s hard to pick just one. I’m incredibly proud of the land development projects I’ve led at both Stantec and Shane Homes Group of Companies. Seeing a community progress from paper plans to streets lined with homes and knowing you’ve helped shape a place that will house hundreds of families is deeply rewarding. Currently, I am really excited about our newest community – Esker Park! We are currently underway with construction out there, and it’s been amazing to see the progress there on-site after having reviewed drawings and plans for several years! This is Shane Homes Group of Companies’ first Super Community, where we are acting as both the developer and sole home builder.

Do you belong to any industry associations or groups?

Yes, I’m proud to volunteer with CREW Calgary, where I currently serve as co-chair of the mentorship committee. I was previously a mentee in the program for two years, and that experience has been truly transformative. I’ve gained invaluable guidance and formed lasting relationships through CREW, and I’m passionate about giving back to the next wave of professionals in our industry.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the field?

Be curious and vulnerable, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The most successful people in this field are continuous learners who combine technical knowledge with strong communication and leadership skills. Seek out mentors, build relationships, and stay open to growth. And don’t be afraid to show people your true colours (be genuine!).
