Meet Jared Rurka – Summer Intern – Triovest Realty Advisors.
Tell us about your education background.
I began my Bachelor of Commerce at Red Deer Polytechnic before transferring to the University of Calgary, where I concentrated in Real Estate Studies and graduated in June 2024. During my time at Haskayne, I expanded my knowledge through rigorous coursework and active participation in extracurricular activities. I was involved with the Real Estate Students Association (RESA), took part in commercial real estate tours organized by the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies, and competed in various real estate case competitions. The connections I forged with faculty enriched my learning experience and played a crucial role in securing an internship at Triovest. These relationships, along with those I developed with peers and mentors, will continue to be key to my professional growth.
I have recently set my sights on pursuing a career in commercial sales and leasing, with a particular interest in multifamily residential transactions. To support this goal, I will be furthering my education through licensing with the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA).
How did your interest in real estate begin?
My exposure to real estate began early, as my parents owned several rental properties in Rimbey, Alberta, where I grew up. However, my specific interest in commercial real estate was sparked during high school after a visit from a family friend who owned a real estate firm in Austin, Texas. During our conversations, he shared his experiences in the industry and introduced me to career paths beyond single-family residential real estate, as well as influential business figures like Grant Cardone. This pivotal moment, combined with the education and connections I gained at the University of Calgary, solidified my passion for real estate both as a dynamic industry and an asset class.
Tell us about your current role, including any associations you belong to and roles you may have in them
I am currently finishing the final weeks of my summer internship at Triovest Realty Advisors, which I began in May after completing my Bachelor of Commerce from the Haskayne School of Business. This role has provided an exceptional introduction to the commercial real estate industry and has been an invaluable learning experience.
Triovest offers a unique rotational program where new graduates are mentored across key departments within the company. Over the course of the 16-week program, I worked closely with teams in asset management, property management/operations, development/construction, and leasing, while also gaining exposure to property accounting and marketing. This hands-on experience has been instrumental in deepening my understanding of commercial real estate and helping me determine the direction of my career.
In addition to my role at Triovest, I have recently started volunteering with the Calgary Inner City Builders Association (CICBA). Here, I am working on enhancing the onboarding process and integrating CRM software to improve operational efficiency and member engagement in inner-city redevelopment.
