Meet a REDL Participant: Mackenzie Clarry

Mackenzie recently completed her first Real Estate Development Leadership course, HSK 828: Mixed Use Real Estate, instructed by Rob Spanier. Read about Mackenzie’s experience in the course and how her learning is supporting her professional growth.

Mackenzie, congratulations on recently completing your first Real Estate Development Leadership (REDL) course this spring! Tell us about yourself.

I hold a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Manitoba, where I developed a strong foundation in marketing and international business. This educational background ultimately paved the way for my entry into commercial real estate. After completing my undergraduate degree, I seized an opportunity for a marketing role at a prominent national brokerage, discovered my passion for commercial real estate, and decided to pursue a career in the brokerage industry.

In my current role as an Associate | Transaction Manager at Colliers Calgary, I collaborate with a team of brokers specializing in Calgary’s Suburban & Beltline Office Market. I am dedicated to delivering exceptional client experiences and crafting impactful marketing initiatives. My responsibilities include developing compelling proposals and property listing materials, as well as managing lease and sale transactions in compliance with Calgary’s suburban office markets.

Beyond my professional role, I am deeply engaged with CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women) Calgary, where I have found remarkable opportunities for professional advancement and networking since joining in 2022. Currently serving as Director – Emerging Leader and volunteering with the Marketing Committee, my active involvement with CREW Calgary and the Women’s Network at Colliers underscores my dedication to promoting gender diversity and empowerment within the commercial real estate industry.

What were some of your biggest takeaways during the course?

The most intriguing aspect of the course was delving into the retail aspects of a mixed-use development. As someone who is entrenched in the office market, it was refreshing and intriguing to explore the retail side in a mixed-use context.

My biggest takeaway was the importance of leveraging complementary industry expertise in a mixed-use project. Developers who collaborate with a diverse team of professionals not only enhance their project outcomes but also foster a deeper understanding of the complexities inherent in mixed-use and commercial real estate ventures.

One memorable quote from our instructor, Rob Spanier, encapsulated the essence of place, emphasizing the importance of understanding human behaviour and the value of time and money. It was enlightening to gain behind-the-scenes understanding and firsthand experiences from local retail business operators and industry leaders.

How was your in-class experience?

The course exceeded my expectations. I appreciated the value I gained from new professional connections and a broadened perspective on mixed-use development. I was also pleasantly surprised by the calibre of my peers in the course. Engaging with such focused, qualified, and intelligent individuals enriched the learning experience and fostered valuable networking opportunities. I enjoyed interacting with like-minded professionals, while also getting fresh perspectives that enhanced the overall in-person learning experience.

How has this REDL course supported your professional growth?

The practical knowledge I gained from the course is already enabling me to approach clients with a more comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of mixed-use projects. This experience has fueled my interest in exploring further commercial real estate courses with REDI and expanding my expertise in the field. I’m passionate about proactive learning, staying abreast of industry trends, and tackling new challenges, and I’m committed to continuing my professional development journey and driving positive change in the industry landscape.
