What Is Real Estate Education?

The Real Estate Education Landscape

Whether you have begun your career in real estate already, or you are currently looking to start off in the industry, understanding what educational components are necessary to achieve your career goals in real estate can be tricky. Unlike engineering, psychology, or even accounting, real estate does not have one defined path that leads you to achieving your career objectives. Instead, members of the industry have found themselves learning through field experience with limited or no prior knowledge. It’s easy to see how approaching a profession in this way might lead to preventable failures. Educating yourself is the first step to success when choosing a career path, so why not establish the same standard in real estate?

When you hear the words real estate education, what comes to your mind? Most people associate real estate education with becoming a REALTOR® or a real estate agent by becoming licensed. But becoming a real estate agent is not the only career path available to you in the real estate industry.

In May 2019, Canada’s real estate sector employed more than 300,000 Canadians in the real estate industry (Statista, 2021). As employment trends have been on the rise since April 2020, now is a great time to get educated and begin your career in the real estate sector.

How to Find the Right Education for You

Online real estate gurus and uncertified sources of real estate education are easy to come by with a quick web search. But in many cases, to be hireable or gain credibility you will need a reliable source of education. The Real Estate Development Institute of Canada (REDI Canada) has been providing this educational foundation for beginners, entrepreneurs, and seasoned industry professionals for over 15 years.

Looking to become an investor or apart of the development process in the real estate industry? You will quickly notice how intricate the processes related to investment or development can become. Firstly, understanding how to maximize your return on investment requires precise data analysis, forecasting, market research, and accurate financial modelling. Secondly, understanding the laws and regulations surrounding a particular asset will determine the feasibility of a project. Lastly, an in-depth understanding of the application, construction processes and timelines will solidify a project into reality. REDI Canada’s Real Estate Development Leadership Certificate in partnership with the Haskayne School of Business’ Executive Education is an immersive in-person program that provides insights into the development process for various types of properties, including residential, commercial, and industrial. Taught by industry experts, their perspectives on real estate development will provide you with a realistic and practical understanding of the real estate development in Canada.

In addition to the Real Estate Development Leadership Certificate, starting on December 1st, REDI Canada will launch an additional program that offers pre-licensing courses online in partnership with the Haskayne School of Business to prepare you for your exams with the Real Estate Council of Alberta. The first course, the Fundamentals of Condominium Management, will introduce learners to the many skills and competencies required to pursue a career in property management, with a specialization in condominium ownership. Most mid-to-large scale condominium projects require a property manager that is responsible for the overall financial and operational management of the asset. Tasked with addressing tenant concerns, collecting rent, dealing with maintenance, and managing budget, a career as a condominium property manager can be very rewarding. As one of your first steps to becoming a property manager, you will need to take pre-licensing courses to eventually become a licensed property manager and begin putting your skills to work.

Investing in a reliable source of education while either beginning or continuing your career in the real estate industry gives you a competitive edge, increases your professional confidence, and sets you on the right path to success.
