Commercial real estate encompasses the main asset types of retail, office and industrial properties. This course is ideal for anyone looking to gain a highly nuanced appreciation for the unique differences of each asset type that contribute to creating successful developments. John Fisher is Executive Vice President at CBRE, the world’s largest commercial real estate services firm, a board member of NAIOP North America and holds a MBA. John shares his 18 years experience with the class as he takes participants through the full process of site selection, pro-forma creation, and leasing to assess the feasibility of a development plan for each of the three core asset types.

Course Details

There are fundamental differences between residential and commercial real estate development. This course focuses on the unique aspects of three commercial market segments: industrial, retail, and office. Gain an in-depth understanding of topics related to market analysis, site selection, the planning and construction process, marketing to commercial tenants, and long-term development strategies. In collaboration with peers, interact with expert guest speakers, senior leaders, and examples of active commercial projects from across Canada.

Graded Assessments 

The instructor provides feedback and assigns a pass/fail grade based on your contribution to a group assignment in each course. These assignments apply the in-class concepts to real world projects or scenarios. 

By completion of this course, successful learners will be able to:  

  1. Gain a high-level understanding of the current market environment for retail, industrial and office properties in Canada, using Calgary as a case study
  2. Recognize terminology specific to the commercial real estate (CRE) industry and in news media and scholarly articles
  3. Research where and how to find market information on the CRE industry
  4. Interact with several key CRE developers from across Canada, through guest speakers and a site visit
  5. Assess the viability of a site from best use to marketability for a CRE project
  6. Identify the differences for construction financing requirements and evaluating the value of tenants across the retail, industrial, and office market segments
  7. Differentiate between marketing to commercial versus residential real estate and identify key differences when marketing to retail, industrial, and office users
  8. Prepare a project viability report and present to the class as if they are investors
  • Each course requires attendance and participation throughout the instructional days and experiential activities. 

    The REDL program is unique because it brings together professionals and leaders from a range of backgrounds, including instructors, guest-speakers, and industry leaders. In-class networking, mutual exchange of ideas, and group discussions are a critical source of value within this program. As a result, REDL participants must attend in-person.  

    The course includes pre-reading material, 14 hours of instructional time, an experiential learning activity (such as a site visit, approximately 2 hours), and a capstone project presentation session (2 hours). Expect to spend about 5 – 8 hours outside of instructional days on course tasks.

John has worked on a variety of notable projects across Canada and is frequently called upon for industry articles, speaking events and publications.

John has an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University) /Schulich School of Business (York University) and a BA in Economics (University of Calgary).

No. The in-person Real Estate Development Leadership (REDL) certificate is a robust, experiential program best-suited for individuals with some exposure to the real estate development industry. While the competencies and topics addressed in both programs are similar, the extent to which instructors discuss topics, case studies, showcase guest-speakers, and tour real world sites in the REDL program is unparalleled.   

The online Real Estate Development Professional (REDP) certificate is perfect for aspiring or new real estate development professionals across Canada. It builds foundational knowledge, skills, and frameworks that participants can take with them as they establish a career in real estate development.

You can start with any course (except for Finance 2, which has a Finance 1 prerequisite).  

We recommend that certificate participants start with the core courses; this helps inform your learning for the elective courses.  

Each course spans approximately three weeks, which includes:  

  • Access to pre-read materials.  
  • Two in-class instructional days (8:30 am- 4:30 pm)* 
  • An in-person site visit (evening, depending on site restrictions)* 
  • A virtual final presentation session (4:00- 6:00 pm MT)*  

Instructional days are back-to-back except for finance courses, which have a week between the two in-person days.
